Michigan Chimney Crown

CHIMNEY REPAIR TIPS REPLACING THE CHIMNEY CROWN

Many times as a homeowner or property investor you will find your chimney in need of some minor chimney repair or chimney sweeping.  The first step is gain access to the chimney. If your chimney is 30 feet tall and inaccessible it may be wise to hire a chimney repair specialist. Most reputable masonry contractors will provide you with a free estimate. Once you have gained access to your chimney you can begin the repair process.

The second step is to assess the level of chimney repair necessary. If your chimney crown is cracked this can often times be a simple enough chimney repair to perform for an experienced do-it-yourselfer. The chimney crown is the top concrete part of the chimney.  Any chimney crown repair begins with the removal of the damaged crown. Most Chimney repair specialist will chip away the concrete with a rotary hammer or pneumatic chisel. As a DIY homeowner an older and more manual method may be necessary to remove the chimney crown. For this I would recommend a chisel, 5 lb sledge hammer, & brick hammer. Of coarse the tool necessary for chimney repair and chimney crown replacement are dependent on the size and thickness of the crown.

Once you have removed the chimney crown inspect the flue on the chimney. The chimney flue liner is the ceramic insert that runs up the center of the chimney. If the flue is cracked it may be time to call in a chimney repair professional. Provided the chimney flu is in sound condition you can begin replacing the chimney crown.  The next step in the chimney repair process is the clean and loose debris and dust of the top of the chimney. Use a stiff bristle brush to clean of any particles.

The next step in the chimney repair process is to mix up some concrete. In most cases I recommend that the DIY homeowner use a redi-mix concrete. When I do a chimney repair I prefer using fiber reinforced crack resistant concrete. I have found that the thicker/stiffer the concrete is mixed the less likely it is to run down the side of the chimney this will make for a cleaner chimney repair. When working in a warmer climate and temperatures exceed 80 degrees on the day you do your chimney repair you will want to mix your concrete more thin/loose.

Make sure to slope your concrete away from the ceramic flue liner to allow for proper water drainage. I find that when you make your chimney crown thicker it makes for a longer lasting chimney repair. On Most chimney repairs on chimney crown pour the concrete 4-7 inches thick at the flue and slope it down to a 2 inch edge. Achieving a smooth finish on your concrete can take years of practice to master but with some patience most DIY homeowners can handle this repair

The above information has been provided for the benefit of the DIY homeowner by Mark Allen Maupin  of Brick Repair LLC (248) 895-7752. Metro Detroit Michigan Masonry Contractor Has Tips on Brick Repair and Brickwork for the Do-it-Yourself Homeowner

When hiring a Michigan masonry contractor is cost prohibitive, homeowners often attempt to do their own repairs. Using these techniques can help produce a quality masonry repair

Michigan Bricklayer
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 14, 2012 ) Detroit MI – Brick chimney repair can be dangerous work. Hiring a masonry contractor can be cost prohibitive for some Michigan homeowners. Mark Maupin, Michigan masonry contractor and president of Brick Repair, LLC provides tips for homeowners who attempt to do it themselves.

The first step to any brick repair job is accessing the damaged area. Brick work on the ground that is easily accessible can often times be tuck pointed without a great deal of difficulty. Tuck-pointing is the replacement of damaged mortar joints. A complete step by step video breakdown of tuck-pointing can be seen at http://michiganchimneyrepair.com/Howto.aspx.

Chimneys can be a completely different matter all together. "If your chimney is very tall and difficult to access safely, then I recommend hiring a chimney repair specialist," said Maupin. "Most reputable chimney repair and masonry contractors will evaluate the extent of repairs to be done and provide a free estimate." The first thing to fail on a chimney is usually the chimney crown. The chimney crown is the concrete on the top of the chimney.

If your chimney is accessible and the chimney crown is cracked this can often times be a simple enough chimney repair to perform for an experienced do-it-yourselfer. If the flue is cracked it may be time to call in a chimney repair professional. Provided the chimney flu is in sound condition you can begin replacing the chimney crown. The next step in the chimney repair process is the clean and loose debris and dust of the top of the chimney. Use a stiff bristle brush to clean off any particles.
The next step in the chimney repair process is to mix up some concrete. In most cases I recommend that the DIY homeowner use a redi-mix concrete. I have found that the thicker/stiffer the concrete is mixed the less likely it is to run down the side of the chimney. This will make for a cleaner chimney repair. When working in a warmer climate where temperatures are exceeding 80 you will want to mix your concrete more thin/loose/wet.
Make sure to slope your concrete away from the ceramic flue liner to allow for proper water drainage. I find that when you make your chimney crown thicker it makes for a longer lasting chimney repair. On most chimney crown repairs pour the concrete 4-7 inches thick at the flue and slope it down to a 2 inch edge. Achieving a smooth finish on your concrete can take years of practice to master but with some patience most DIY homeowners can handle this repair.

There are several things that can cause problems with chimneys including chimney leaks, creosote build-up that creates a chimney fire hazard, and a cracked chimney crown to name a few. Mark Maupin currently specializes in chimney repair. Read his latest blog post for DIY Chimney repair tips at http://chimneyrepairmichigan.blogspot.com/2010/05/chimne ...

When asked why he tells people how to do what he gets paid to do, Mark said, "I would rather see the job done right than have to come in and repair a botched chimney repair job later. It's easier to fix it right the first time. If the repair is easy enough for the homeowner to do it themselves, then I can spend my time where I'm most needed."

Mark Maupin believes he is doing a great service by providing tips for the DIY homeowner. "It displays honesty and integrity when I'm not hiding behind my knowledge and experience. There will always be someone who needs to hire a professional. As far as I'm concerned, no job is too small, but like most contractors, I prefer to do the bigger jobs. This way, I'm not spending time commuting between jobs."

Oakland County Mi fireplace chimney fires are a reality of life. Michigan chimney fires destroy thousands of homes and lives. Having chimney cleaners provide a regular chimney cleaning to Redford chimney can prevent most chimney fires. Most Redford residents don’t even realize the risk their homes could be in from chimney fires. First, let us establish who is at risk.

If proper precautions are taken, brick fireplace chimney fires can be avoided. A chimney should be inspected by an Redford Michigan chimney sweep and chimney cleaning specialist regularly. First, you need to understand the anatomy of how a fireplace works and how a fireplace chimney fire is set into motion. When a fire is built in a masonry or brick chimney it is started in the fireplace fire box.

The chimney firebox is built out of fire brick. A fire brick, firebrick, or refractory brick is a block of refractory ceramic material used in lining furnaces, kilns, fireboxes, and fireplaces. A fireplace fire box is primarily to withstand high temperature, but will also usually have a low thermal conductivity for greater energy efficiency. Fireplace firebrick are weaker, but they are much lighter, and insulate far better than dense bricks. A fireplace fire box should be free from cracks. The fireplace fire brick will taper in toward a damper and smoke shelf. A fireplace firebox is the only spot in which burning wood should occur.

It is comonly accepted that where there is chimney smoke there is fire, so obviously when you burn wood in your masonry and brick fireplace chimney, smoke is released and travels up from your fire box and into a smoke shelf and chimney flue liner. As the warm smoke travels up the chimney flue liner it begins to cool . That smoke condenses on the inside walls of your chimney flue liner and is converted into creosote.

Creosote is the leading cause of chimney fires. Creosote is a highly flammable material that ignites easily from flame or spark. The type of wood that is burned in a brick chimney fireplace and frequncy of chimney cleaning affects the amount of creosote built up on the chimney flue liner. Green, or unseasoned wood, contains a lot of moisture. This means it takes more heat to burn the wood in the brick fireplace firebox. Green wood produces more creosote.

Outside temperature also plays a factor in the amount of creosote formed. Chimneys that run up the side of your brick house are more apt to produce creosot. than one that runs up the center of your home This is because brick concrete and stone masonry has a low insulation value. The warm smoke being hit by cool temperatures condenses more quickly.

Proper air flow is critical to your stone or brick chimney. Making sure your fireplace damper is open all the way so that smoke ventilates through the chimney quickly also reduces the risk of creosote forming. A Fireplace chimney must be built to a proper height to draft properly.Usually three feet above the roof or ten feet from the roof.

You must make sure to clean your chimney annually. When you ignite paper or cardboard in your fireplace, often times small flaming pieces of ash and soot can drift up the flue liner and are more likely to ignite the creosote that has built up. A chimney sweep is a person who who makes a living cleaning chimneys. A vast majority of chimney sweeps were children during the industrial revolution Here is what wikipedia says about chimney sweeps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimney_sweep

Roof Protection during Redford Chimney Repair and Chimney Cleaning

Demolition of a chimney by its nature can be a very messy process. The removal of spalled brick, chipped brick, and loose, cracked concrete on your Redford Michigan chimney crown inevitably will lead to dust and debris falling on your roof or shingles during masonry repair. When laying brick, the bricklayer spreads the mortar onto the brick and excess mortar can fall onto your roof shingles. Once the mortar hardens it can remove the granules from your roof shingles, leading to wear and tear on your roof. That is why when chimney repair, masonry restoration, chimney crown replacement, or chimney crown repair is performed on your chimney it is imperative to protect your roof in the chimney construction area.

You can use various items to protect your roof during Redford mi chimney crown demolition and chimney crown repair. Items I have used to protect the roof on chimney repair and chimney restoration projects While working in Redford Township include drop cloths, carpet remnants, rubber mats, cardboard, and poly tarps. The more extensive the chimney demolition and chimney construction project, the more layers of drop cloth and/or carpet are required. I find using carpet remnants to be the best method. The carpet does not have the tendency to slide on roof shingles on small projects, only one layer is necessary. Poly tarps are only good for small chimney repair projects. They are lightweight, which makes them more susceptible to breezes that you encounter when doing chimney repair. They provide protection from falling mortar, but will do little against falling debris that is encountered during chimney crown removal, large chimney crown repair, and chimney brick replacement.

Once your Redford chimney repair has been completed and the protective covering surrounding the chimney has been removed any loose particles and dust should be brushed from the shingles with a soft brush and whenever possible, the roof should be washed down. Warning: use of chemicals such as muriatic acid and some concrete removers/detergents can also damage your shingles. Once you have rinsed the roof off, be sure to clean out your gutters. Nobody wants a gutter full of concrete after getting their chimney repair completed. Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Brick Repair (248) 895 7752

With any chimney repair or masonry restoration project comes debris. Small chunks of mortar, pieces of concrete, and chunks of brick from the demolition of the brickwork can add up fast. And lets face it, its not like your local garbageman or trash removal service is going to grab a garbage can that weighs 500 lbs and carry it away. That is why whenever you plan on doing any kind of demolition project, chimney repair, or brickwork you need to know what to do with your debris and trash.

One option is to remove the brick debris, concrete, and mortar yourself. This involves filling up a trailer or truck and hauling out the brick, concrete, and mortar. You can then haul this material to the dump, but the dump charges by weight. A much more practical method of removing the debris, is to find a local concrete recycling company. Most concrete recycling companies will take any concrete and mortar you have and dispose of it. A select few concrete recycling companies, commonly referred to as the concrete crusher, will take your brick debris also. Concrete, brick, and mortar are ground up to a gravel sized consistency. This aggregate is then recycled into new concrete. The problem with using concrete crushers and recyclers is unless you have a dump truck or dump trailer, you must handle your material and debris not only when you haul it off of the job, but when you dump it. By far the most cost-effective way to go on any large scale demolition project is to rent a dumpster. Whenever you rent the dumpster be sure to specify what you plan on disposing of inside of it.

At Brick Repair LLC we are committed to the local Michigan environment. We use concrete recycling companies whenever possible. Can a Homeowner Repair and Replace Damage Motor Joints With Out Much Training?
Mark Maupin Speaks on Tuck pointing Basics at Real Estate Investor Meeting

On April 10, 2008, Mark Maupin of Redford chimney repair (313) 459-0617 a local Michigan masony contractor spoke on Tuck pointing basics at Nation Real Estate Network in Livonia. Mark has 12 years experience in specialized in masonry restoration, chimney repair, and historic restoration.
Mr. Maupin address tuck pointing basics- Having masonry joints fall apart and deteriorate over time is a common problem in Michigan. Tuck pointing is the removal and replacement of damaged mortar joints. Repairing cracked mortar joints may not be as difficult as one may think. With the purchase of a few tools, anyone can tackle some basic tuck pionting repairs. Most of these tools can be purchased at your local hardware, stores. You will need a masonry trowel, a tuckpointer, either a circular saw or an angle grinder equipped with a diamond blade, and of course mortar (recommend type n redi mix mortar), and a jointing tool.

tuckpointing
Grind back damaged mortar joints

Grind back damaged mortar joints
tuckpoint new mortar into joint and tool out joint

To begin with, the homeowner will want to remove the cracked and damaged mortar. To do this you will carefully saw or grind out the damaged mortar. “Take the Time Needed!” A careless slip with the grinder can make for a damaged brick instead of a cleaned out joint. They want to remove the mortar at least an additional 1/2 of an inch deeper than the existing joint depth. Make sure to cover any dust sensitive areas with a tarp. Always wear a respirator, and safety glasses: this is VERY dusty work. The type of brick they are working with and temperature on the day they are working on can affect your repairs strength and longevity. On a warmer day and when working with a softer brick you will want to clean the exposed joints out with water. This has two benefits, 1) it will allow for a slower cure time for your mortar giving you stronger joints. 2) It ensures that the exposed joint has been properly cleaned out which will allow the new mortar to bond with the old mortar.

Avoiding Future Chimney Repair And Masonry Repair

Building in brick is a wonderful construction method. Brick is a durable and beautiful building material. Masonry is a proven age-old construction method, almost as old as building itself. Most brick homes these days are built with a brick veneer. In simple terms, this means that the brick are built more as a decorative siding than out of structural necessity. While known for its strength and beauty brick is not immune to Mother Nature. Here are some helpful hints on preserving your brick homes beauty and preventing future Chimney repair.

1. Install a good gutter system: moisture is one of the largest causes of brick deterioration. On many older homes without a gutter system, you will notice the bottom row, or course, of brick is crumbling away to nothing from the water pooling against it.

2. Seal your brick regularly. Applying a good sealer to your brick can help keep moisture out of your brick the will help to keep your brick from spalling (having the face of the brick pop off or deteriorate). Remember that different sealers have different finishes and can adjust the color of your brick slightly, so be prepared to seal all of your brick.

3. Inspect your chimney cap bi-yearly. All concrete and mortar is susceptible to cracking. Finding and repairing cracks in your chimney’s cap can save from having to partially or completely replace your chimney. When it comes to brick, moisture is the enemy, especially in climates with harsh winters. Freezing water expands, wreaking havoc on your brick

4. Build for your environment. When your new brick are being laid, there are a variety different ways in which the mortar joints can be tooled out or finished. Rake jointing (a deep joint between the brick) can look very nice, but is not recommend in wet and cold climates. In areas with constantly changing weather (like Michigan), an S joint is the preferred method. S jointing looks very nice and helps seal the mortar to the face of the brick, preventing moisture from penetrating.

5. Fix any cracks early. If you notice any cracks forming, try to have them repaired as soon as possible. Cracks have a way of spreading and growing. Catching them early can help stop their spread.

Performing some basic masonry maintence can add years to the life of your brick house. Should brick repairs or restoration become necessary don’t hesitate contact a professional for more information contact

Types of Masonry Joints

There are several styles and kinds of masonry joints. The masonry joint is the area of mortar in between your brick, block, or stone. On brick and block the vertical joints are referred to as head joints and the horizontal joints are referred to as bed joints.
The way in which you tool, or joint your masonry work is not only for aesthetic purposes. In drier climates masonry joint style is strictly personal preference. While some styles of jointing are more resilient to weather, when you live in a climate like Michigan where you have high precipitation and constantly shifting seasons jointing style can be structural and more than just personal preference.
The first style of jointing is the concave joint. Concave joints are shallow and seal against the face of the brickwork evenly. The two most common tools used on a concave joint are the s-jointer (named for its appearance) and the barrel jointer. There are a variety of sizes that s-jointer and barrel jointers come in. The concave joint also is good at concealing small irregularities in masonry construction.
The “V” joint is very similar to the concave joint. It is also a very weather resistant form of jointing. The primary difference between the “v” joint and the “s” joint is the “v” joint provides a very small line in the center of the mortar joint. The “v” joint is not nearly as common as the concave joint.
Another style of joint is the weather joint. The weather joint is the most weather resilient style of joint. This is because it seals evenly against the bottom edge of the brickwork and allows moisture to drain off of it.
The fourth style of mortar joint is the rake joint. The rake joint is a deeper joint than the concave joint and can look very appealing on more textured or uneven brick. The rake joint is achieved through the use of either a tool called a rake jointer (skate) or by wire brushing the mortar between the bricks out to the desired depth.
The fifth style of jointing is the squeezed or weeping joint. A weeping joint is when you lay your brick on top of your mortar and do not scrape any of the excess mortar away. While this may sound like the easiest and worst appearing of the joints, for the trained mason this is actually the hardest type of joint. As a mason laying brick becomes second nature like breathing. This means that without any thought at all the mason will oftentimes find his trowel scraping away the excess mortar between the joints in order to apply the mortar to the head joint of the next brick he lays. I speak from personal experience when I tell you it can be quite frustrating to have to relay the same brick several times because you are so used to scraping away the excess mortar as you lay the brick. The weeping joint is the only joint not pictured below.
The sixth style of jointing is the flush joint. The flush joint is the easiest of the joints for a mason to construct. The flush joint is typically used under walls that are going to be painted or not seen. It is where the mason simply scrapes the excess mortar out from between the bricks. No additional tooling is required.
The beaded joint is a raised and rounded, bead-shaped segment of the mortar away from the mortar surface producing an old-fashioned, formal design. Although beaded joints can create interesting shadows, they are not recommended for exterior use due to their exposed ledges. Beaded joints allow moisture to penetrate your masonry work.
The eight style of joint is the struck joint. The struck joint provides poor weather resistance but will emphasize the bed joints of your masonry construction nicely.
The final style of jointing is the grapevine joint. The grapevine joint is a combination of the struck joint and the “v” joint. This style of jointing is not very weather resilient but does give the appearance of a somewhat deeper joint. The grapevine is a very shallow joint with a line running through it.

Types of Masonry Joints

The following information is provided by Mark Maupin of Redford chimney repair
A lot of Michigan residents ask me if you can really do a chimney repair and masonry construction in the winter. Michigan winters can wet, and cold. Masonry work is not a fan of the cold tempratures and wet weather. While this can make working a little difficult it does not make it impossible. Masonry walls and concrete achieve half of their compression strength in there initial set. This means if you can get your masonry set up while you are the battle is nearly won. Here are some of the methods I use to do this.

1. Use a mortar accelerator to help the mortar set up faster
2. Use warm water to mix your mortar and concrete this will also aid the mortor in setting up
3. Use warm dry material
4. Tarp in and lay the brick i a heated enclosure
5. Use a fast setting concrete

Some of your repairs you can actually get a better deal on if you do them in the winter months. Most masonry contractors who work in Michigan or similar climates slow down in the winter. This does not mean rush out to get a driveway poured in the winter. What this does mean is if you have a masonry contractor with experience working a Michigan winter you might be able to save a few dollars by having it done now rather than waiting for spring.
This is how we go about a typical Michigan winter chimney repair. We will set up the scaffold and begin our demolition. Once the damaged brick on the chimney have been removed we begin to torch and heat the new brick. Once the brick are HOT to the touch mixing the mortar begins. Mortar is mixed using an accelerator and warm water. If your brick and mortar are hot then they will set up like it was a warm day. After laying the brick we will joint and tool the masonry joints then torch the wall again before brushing it.
I hope this was helpful for anyone looking to get masonry work done in the winter, please feel free to call with any questions 1-(313) 459-0617
Identifying Chimney Leaks
Water leaks on brick chimneys are a common problem. Below is a list of common causes for chimney leaks and how to asses the leakage associated with brick chimneys.:
1) Water runs down the ceramic insert (Flue liner).
2) Water soaks through brick often times thruough damaged and loose mo
3) The Chimney flashing is not properly installed and water leaks form at the flashing

1) Most masonry chimneys consist of a ceramic liner called the flue quite simply, the flue is the vertical passageway that allows smoke and debris to escape from your house. Usually, there is one flue for each heating appliance in your home, which includes fireplaces, furnaces and wood stoves. However, each brick chimney can contain more than one flue. The flue is open and exposed at the top to allow for ventilation. This will also allow moisture to drain done the center of it. This is really the simplest “leak” issue to fix. The way to repair your leak is to install a chimney cap. Most chimney caps are a stainless steel cover that attaches to the top of the chimney. A chimney cap consists of a spark arrester to prevent fires and a mesh of expanded metal section to prevent animals from entering the chimney.

2) It may be that the Masonry it self is damaged. . The first step is gain access to the chimney. If your chimney is 30 feet tall and inaccessible it may be wise to hire a chimney repair specialist. Most reputable masonry contractors will provide you with a free estimate. Once you have gained access to your chimney you can examine the extent of the damage. If the concrete of the top of the chimney is damaged or the mortar between the bricks is cracked and deteriorated it may be time to bring in a professional to replace the chimney crown and or tuck point the mortar joints.
3) It may be that the flashing around the chimney is inadequate, worn, corroded, or that it was improperly installed in the first place. This is simple enough to access all that is necessary is to take your typical garden hose and run water over the flashing where it meets the masonry

Causes of Brick Deterioration

Oftentimes in Michigan you will notice your brick beginning to deteriorate, or the faces of the brick actually falling off. When your brick faces begin to deteriorate, or fall off, it is referred to as spalling. The main cause of spalling is moisture. When brick is exposed to water for excessively long periods of time the moisture begins to absorb into the brick itself. In fact, many bricks are actually quite porous and will absorb moisture like a sponge.
Constant shift in temperatures, as well as regular freezing and thawing will then cause the face of the brick to pop off or spall. This process can be hastened around high moisture areas such as gutters and downspouts, or on areas of your masonry that are exposed to moisture heavily such as your chimney. The amount of damage to the brick is dependant on the amount of moisture and climate shifts.

Many Michigan homeowners attempt to hide the damage or spalling of their brick by replacing the damaged areas with a subpar brick match. Sometimes when a masonry repair has not been installed correctly or the brick do not match, homeowners and contractors will try to hide this poor repair with paint. This is one of the worst things you can possibly do to your masonry. People think paint will seal their masonry and help camouflage their poor repair. In fact painting brick only traps moisture inside the brickwork and hastens the spalling process. Brick needs to breathe.

Some masonry construction such as cinderblock, cinder brick, and concrete are not as susceptible to spalling once they are painted. It is really the more porous bricks, such as reclaim brick, sand lime brick, and chicago common bricks that are most susceptible to spalling and at the most risk once painted.

In climates such as Michigan one of the best ways to prevent your brick from spalling is in the proper construction of your brick wall. Some of these methods include use of the proper mortar and the proper style of jointing during construction.

When you notice your brick are spalled or that your mortar has deteriorated, the best solution to this problem is to remove the damaged mortar, remove the damaged brick, and then replace them.

Hopefully this information has proven useful. At Redford chimney repair we are committed to quality masonry restoration and the beautification of our communities through quality craftsmanship. If you notice spalled brick on your chimney, around your gutters, or the deterioration of your mortar joints on your house, please feel free to contact us for a free masonry repair consultation.

Michigan chimney expert warns about the dangers of chimney fires and shares ways to help prevent these potential dangerous situations. I’m sure most people don’t spend too much time worrying about the risk they are taking when they don’t take proper care of their chimney, however dirty chimneys are predisposed to fires that could take a dramatic turn for the worst and possibly devastate homes and/or lives.
Chimney fires can be easily avoided if you take suitable precisions, but to do this you must fully understand how chimney fires are set into motion. I’m quite sure everybody knows that when you’re burning wood the smoke it releases travels up the chimney. This smoke is full of matter that condenses on the flue liner within your chimney. This condensed matter is also known as creosote. As soon as the creosote has been produced, it continues to bond to the walls waiting for any indication of flame or spark to ignite it.
The type of wood that you burn can also effect how the amount of creosote that builds up along the flue liner. Unseasoned wood (green), for example, is the key perpetrator in this. Unseasoned wood holds a lot of moisture which needs to be removed in order to burn. Using unseasoned wood produces a cooler smoke than seasoned wood, which is more likely to condense on the inside of your chimney.
The temperature also plays an important role on the effects of your chimney. The cold air outside helps to cool off the smoke from your fireplace, and also condenses the smoke to form creosote. Having a chimney that runs up the side of your house, rather than through the center, makes it more likely to happen as well.
Not opening the damper all the way or closing the glass doors on your fireplace causes air flow to be constrained. Good air flow is important because it helps to lift smoke from your fireplace before it condenses into creosote.
Bulky, compressed bundles of wood cause cooler fires so smaller, hotter fires are best. I advise against burning cardboard or papers for the simple fact those small flaming pieces of ash and such can drift up your chimney and likely ignite the creosote fixed on the inside of your chimney.
While nothing can completely prevent the forming of creosote, it helps to have your chimney cleaned and examined on a regular basis. This will help to keep the problem at bay.
